On 14 October, the second ministerial meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) and the 30th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Fusion Energy Conference opened in Chengdu, Sichuan. At the opening ceremony, Zhang Guoqing, Vice Premier of the State Council and member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, delivered a speech, in which he stated that fusion energy represents “an essential path for the peaceful use of nuclear energy”.

He added that China remains committed to President Xi Jinping’s rational, coordinated and balanced approach to nuclear security, and is transitioning from basic research to the engineering deployment of controlled nuclear fusion in an orderly manner. He pledged that China would collaborate with all partners to promote the Global Development, Security, Civilization and Governance initiatives, enhance joint R&D on fusion science and technology, accelerate the convergence of scientific and industrial innovation, help formulate safety rules and standards, and encourage interaction and mutual learning. The aim is to make fusion energy more equitable and rational in governance, more inclusive in development, and more open and organized in cooperation. “Together, we can build a cleaner, more beautiful world, and a community with a shared future for humanity,” he said.
