On 12 July, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC)’s Guo-U1 national uranium demonstration project in Ordos, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, produced its first barrel of uranium.
Guo-U1 is the largest natural uranium facility ever built in China. Built to the highest standards and equipped with the nation’s most advanced extraction technologies, the plant is designed to be environmentally friendly, cost-effective, intelligent and highly efficient. Construction began on 12 July 2024, and the first product was delivered exactly one year later, setting a new speed record for domestic uranium projects.
As the largest natural uranium undertaking in China’s nuclear geology and mining sector in its 70-year history, this milestone signals the start of a new era of safe, green, intelligent and highly efficient resource development. Once fully operational, Guo-U1 will provide a secure uranium supply to support national energy security and the wider nuclear industry, while also enhancing China’s competitiveness in the global natural uranium market.
