On 27 June, the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) issued a statement in response to media inquiries concerning China’s independent sampling and testing of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan.

According to the CAEA, several Chinese research institutions have participated in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) monitoring programme for the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Sampling missions were carried out in October 2024 and in February, April and June 2025. During these operations, Chinese experts independently collected seawater and marine organism samples from the waters near the outlets through which Fukushima’s nuclear-contaminated water is discharged.

Currently, no abnormalities in the activity concentration of radionuclides such as tritium, strontium-90, caesium-134 and caesium-137 were detected in the samples. Relevant Chinese data will subsequently be submitted to the IAEA in stages for collation and release.

Japan has recently reiterated its acceptance of long-term international monitoring and China’s independent sampling and monitoring of the ocean discharge, affirming its commitment to continuing such monitoring activities.
