On 13 May, in the presence of the Chinese and Brazilian presidents, Shan Zhongde, Chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA), and the representative of the Brazilian National Commission for Nuclear Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the sustainable development of nuclear energy between the CAEA and the CNEA.
Under the MoU, the two organizations will establish mechanisms for further exchanges, visits, and cooperation. They will actively promote practical cooperation in several key areas, including basic and applied research on nuclear energy, the development and deployment of small modular reactors and multipurpose research reactors, the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle, radioactive waste management and decommissioning, and nuclear safety, security, and emergency response. This cooperation aims to balance development and security, thereby promoting the sustainable development of nuclear energy in both countries and other Global South nations.
