On 24 February, the first concrete was poured for the nuclear island of Unit 1 at Lufeng Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong Province, marking the start of the main construction phase of the project. This milestone also marks the beginning of the development of the two third-generation nuclear power units at the Lufeng site.

The Lufeng Nuclear Power Plant is planned to accommodate six 1000 MWe-class pressurized water reactor units, four of which have already been approved. Units 1 and 2 will use CAP1000 passive safety systems, with a rated capacity of 1250 MWe per unit and a design life of 60 years.

When completed, the six units of the Lufeng Nuclear Power Plant are expected to generate approximately 52 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This is equivalent to replacing 15.77 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 42.69 million tonnes per year - equivalent to planting approximately 117,000 hectares of forest.
