On 17 January, an international conference on nuclear energy, co-organized by CLP Power Hong Kong Limited and the City University of Hong Kong, was successfully held in Hong Kong. Zhang Tingke, Director of the Expert Committee of the China Nuclear Energy Association, was invited to attend the conference and delivered a keynote speech on the current status and future prospects of nuclear power development in the Chinese mainland. He also participated in discussions with other experts and specialists on the crucial role of nuclear power in achieving carbon reduction targets both globally and in Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.
Zhang stressed that nuclear power, which is globally recognized as a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy source, has entered a new era of strategic opportunities for development. China has become one of the world’s leading nuclear power countries, maintaining advanced levels of nuclear safety and operational performance. The country has achieved significant milestones in the research, development and demonstration of advanced nuclear power technologies, as well as in localization and self-sufficiency. China’s nuclear power equipment manufacturing, engineering and construction capabilities are among the best in the world, and its nuclear fuel cycle industry chain has been comprehensively upgraded to provide sustainable support.
Despite these achievements, Zhang acknowledged that the development of nuclear power still faces many challenges in the future. He called for global cooperation, stressing the need for broader, deeper and more sustained exchanges and cooperation among international peers. This joint effort is essential to provide wisdom and strength for a better future and to promote the safe, efficient and sustainable development of nuclear power worldwide.
