The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) approved the Energy Law of the People’s Republic of China at its 12th session on 8 November. The law, which will take effect from 1 January 2025, is divided into nine chapters covering general provisions, energy planning, development and utilization, market system, reserves and emergency response, science and technology innovation, supervision and management, legal liabilities and supplementary provisions.

This comprehensive law lays the legal foundation for China’s energy sector, with Article 27 detailing the country’s nuclear power and strategic layout.
