On 14 October, Liu Jing, Vice Chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA), met with Massimo Aparo, Deputy Director General for Department of Nuclear Safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Beijing to discuss China’s nuclear energy development, the international nuclear safeguards regime and future cooperation between China and the IAEA.

During the meeting, Liu Jing emphasized that the Chinese government views nuclear energy as an important option for addressing climate change, optimizing the energy mix and achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. He stressed China’s commitment to the safe, innovative and peaceful development of nuclear energy, while strictly complying with its international obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the voluntary offer agreement with the IAEA and its additional protocol.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s accession to the IAEA. Liu Jing said that at this new historical juncture, China will make full use of its capabilities and advantages to enhance cooperation with the IAEA, guided by the Global Security Initiative, the Global Development Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping. This includes strengthening cooperation in nuclear safeguards through platform building, technological research and talent development, so as to make a positive contribution to the promotion of peaceful nuclear energy and the prevention of nuclear proliferation in a balanced manner.
