From 15 to 20 July 2024, the China Nuclear Energy Association and the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) co-hosted a successful symposium in Japan to exchange experiences on disaster prevention measures for nuclear power plants against typhoons, tsunamis and earthquakes. The meeting was attended by a distinguished delegation of 22 experts representing 16 Chinese organizations, including nuclear power companies, research institutes and operating companies.
Mr. Masui, the newly appointed President of JAIF, attended the meeting and delivered a keynote address. He emphasized the common need for China and Japan to address natural disasters and highlighted the enhanced bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy through expert exchanges and joint initiatives to promote nuclear safety and sustainable development.
Deputy Secretary-General Zheng Weiping provided an overview of China’s current nuclear energy development and its future path. He predicted a promising era of growth for nuclear energy in light of the dual carbon goals, and stressed that the safe and stable operation of nuclear power plants is a shared responsibility and mission for the East Asian nuclear community.
Mr. Uetake, Senior Managing Director of JAIF, provided insights into Japan’s nuclear power infrastructure and recent public opinion surveys on nuclear power development. Since 2021, there has been a notable increase in public support for nuclear power in Japan. The Japanese government is now developing a new energy policy that includes nuclear power to meet the country’s future electricity needs.
Recognizing the challenges posed by increasing extreme weather events to nuclear disaster preparedness, the meeting concluded that enhanced regional dialogue and cooperation is essential to strengthen nuclear safety standards in the region. This collaborative approach is seen as a key contributor to regional prosperity, stability and the well-being of its people.
