Over the May Day holiday, a landmark achievement was celebrated with the successful installation of China's first commercial reactor-based isotope production facility. This state-of-the-art facility is the result of a joint effort between the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute of the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) and Qinshan Nuclear Power of the China National Nuclear Corporation.
The irradiation facility, a world-leading design, features high reliability, full process shielding, flexible production and high yield. It allows remote, fully automated handling and transfer of isotope targets. It also offers the flexibility to produce a wide variety of short-lived isotopes without disrupting the reactor's normal operation. This capability is critical to meeting current domestic demand for scarce isotopes such as Strontium-89, Yttrium-90 and Lutetium-177, which are essential for various medical applications.
