On the evening of 9 April 2024, at exactly 20:29, a major milestone was reached when Unit 4 of the Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant, developed by China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), successfully completed its first grid connection in Guangxi. This achievement means that the unit is now ready to start generating electricity, a key step towards full commercial operation.

The Fangchenggang nuclear power plant has the distinction of being the first nuclear power plant in China's western region and in areas inhabited by ethnic minority groups. The first phase of the plant, consisting of two units, has been successfully operating commercially since 2016.

The second phase of Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant, including Units 3 and 4, is part of the Hualong One demonstration project. Unit 3, also the first Hualong One reactor in China’s western region, generated electricity on March 25, 2023. It has operated safely and reliably, with a first fuel cycle capacity factor of 98.2% in 2023, setting a new record for the best performance among third-generation reactors in China.
