On March 27, 2024, a historic milestone was reached as the nuclear heating initiative of Huaneng Shidao Bay High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) Demonstration Project began operation. This marks the pioneering integration of a fourth-generation nuclear heating system into an urban district heating network, heralding a significant breakthrough in the application of advanced nuclear technology.
The innovative project uses high-temperature steam generated by the HTGR steam system, which is then used to heat water in a heat exchanger to produce high-temperature water. This water is then channelled to municipal and power plant thermal energy zones. After a secondary heat exchange process, it is converted into hot water for residential heating purposes.
This advancement not only improves and secures the living standards of the population, but also plays a key role in advancing the city's commitment to low-carbon development.
