According to Xinhua news, on 6th November, Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Xi noted, China-France ties have shown a strong momentum of development. Adding that the consensus reached by him and Macron had been actively implemented since his successful state visit to France in March. Citing some successful projects including the No.1 and No. 2 power units of Taishan Nuclear Power Plant (TSNP), which have provided a successful model for the construction of third generation nuclear power plants around the globe, Xi said that China is committed to deepening cooperation with France in the whole industry chain of nuclear energy, encouraging and supporting Chinese enterprises to explore new cooperation with France in the markets of China, France and the third party areas, and strengthening joint research and development of nuclear energy fundamentals and new technology.
Macron said, French companies are eagerly looking forward to taking the opportunity of China's expanded opening-up, further entering into the Chinese market, expanding exports of agricultural products to China, and strengthening cooperation in areas such as aviation, aerospace, and civilian nuclear energy, as well as sci-tech innovation and finance.
TSNP phase I is the largest-ever cooperative project in China between China and France in the energy field. Taishan Nuclear Power Joint Venture Co., Ltd. (TNPJVC), jointly invested and established by CGN, EDF and Guangdong Energy Group, is mainly in charge of financing, construction, operation and management of TSNP Phase I. It adopts the third generation nuclear power technology, consists of two EPR units with the installed capacity of 1750 MW each. EPR is jointly developed by EDF and Framatome. On the basis of more than 40 years global experience and technical progress on pressurized water reactor (PWR), the technology meets not only the European Utility Requirement, IAEA requirement but also Chinese regulations on nuclear safety as well. Its safety and reliability have been promoted greatly.
TSNP Unit 1 started construction in 2009 and was put into commercial operation on December 13, 2018. It is the first operation EPR Unit in the world. TSNP Unit 2 started construction in 2010, with the experience from Unit 1. It became eligible for commercial operation on September 7, 2019.
TSNP Unit 1 and 2 are respectively the third and fourth EPR units being built in the world. Benefited from construction and operation experience accumulated in the last 30 years, the long-term strategic partnership between China and France in the nuclear power field and the participation of experienced and professional companies worldwide, the construction of the two units proceeded orderly. They turned out to be first 2 operation EPR units in the world.
